Sallisaw First Baptist Church
Sallisaw, Oklahoma
Project Description:
Sallisaw First Baptist Church owns nearly all of an entire
city block in downtown Sallisaw.
The original sanctuary, built in the 1920’s and an educational
building, built in the 1980’s, are to be saved. However,
two buildings that are located between them are in very poor
condition and need to be demolished.
None of the existing buildings are connected to each other,
requiring people to walk outside to move from one building to
the next. An alley subdivides their block, accentuating the
problem.
The congregation has a strong desire to grow and has made a
commitment to stay in downtown Sallisaw even though logistically
it might be easier to build new facilities elsewhere.
A Master Plan was developed to allow the congregation to grow
to as many as 700 on this site. It was designed assuming that
the alley could be closed and that area between the existing
sanctuary and educational building would be filled with new
construction.
The first phase of construction will demolish two buildings
and construct a multipurpose building and nursery space in its
place. This construction will be designed to accept a second
floor addition, which will provide additional adult classroom
space. The existing educational building will be remodeled to
convert the existing fellowship hall into a youth center, upgrade
the children’s Sunday School space, and provide additional
office space.
